Everything You Need to Know About Wedding Cakes

Sometimes, couples treat the wedding cake as an afterthought, ordering it at the last minute without paying attention to details. However, the wedding cake is a very important element of the reception. It should match the theme of the event, the décor of the venue, and the couple’s personality.

If the wedding is in a rustic or boho style, the cake should be simple, without unnecessary decorations. Naked, semi-naked, or drip cakes (with dripping icing) decorated with flowers or fruits are the best options.

For a glamorous event, fondant cakes with elegant designs, decorated with lace, pearls, and flowers, work perfectly.

Non-traditional cakes like cupcake towers or muffin cakes have also gained popularity. These can be decorated with cream, fruit, or fondant.

A special attraction is personalized cakes, such as a suitcase for travelers or 3D cakes that reflect the couple’s hobbies or the wedding’s theme.

The next consideration is, of course, the taste and ingredients of the cake. It’s best to choose a universal flavor like vanilla-raspberry, which will appeal to most guests. Not everyone likes halva or oranges. If you want originality, you can order each tier of the cake with a different flavor 🙂 However, don’t choose a cake based solely on your preferences. Sometimes couples who don’t like fruits or fillings tend to order just sponge cake with whipped cream. This isn’t the best solution because many guests may find it bland and uninteresting.

The next factor is the quality of the ingredients. Most bakeries (though not all, fortunately) make cakes from pre-made sponge mixes, plant-based cream, and stabilizers. Such cakes are usually cheap and mass-produced. Real ingredients like butter, cream, mascarpone, fresh fruits, and chocolate are more expensive, so cakes from small artisan bakeries cost more, but the quality is significantly better. It’s also important to be cautious when ordering a cake. For such an important occasion, I wouldn’t recommend hiring a home baker. Without proper equipment, it’s difficult to make a large cake while ensuring proper hygiene and storage. Don’t risk the health of your guests by ordering a cake made in unknown conditions.

It’s also worth checking the skill level of the chosen baker, to ensure they can deliver the cake according to your desired design. It’s best to review the baker’s previous work. Unfortunately, sometimes photos on a website are “borrowed,” and when the cake arrives, it doesn’t meet the couple’s expectations.

Another important point is having a signed contract, which protects both parties.

A beautifully crafted cake with high-quality ingredients can be ruined by improper transport and storage. Make sure to confirm how the cake will be delivered – will it be transported in a refrigerated vehicle, in what packaging, and whether the venue has refrigeration to store the cake properly.

I hope these tips will be useful when ordering your dream wedding cake. Enjoy!
